LIFE: On Moving In and Calling Somewhere Home

dscf8046a

Oh my what a crazy couple of weeks that was. Remember when I hoped July would be a better month than June? Well, it's certainly been trying that's for sure. But, we are all moved into our first house, even if it didn't go as planned.

Being a holiday weekend (we moved over the 4th July weekend) most people already had plans, so we were left moving everything pretty much alone. That was until Joe took a tumble and landed all funky on his ankle which hit a concrete barrier for good measure - as you do. After bravery soldiering on for the afternoon, we ended up going to ER which resulted in taking home a pair of crutches and Joe being off work for the next two weeks.

In the end we had to hire in some help to shift the heavier pieces of furniture (we used College Hunks Hauling Junk which i'd highly recommend) and after four days of trying, numerous trips back and forth, attempting to clean our old apartment and handing in the keys, we were all moved.

The house itself is marvelous. It's so nice having space - so much space I'm not sure were to put everything. It's quiet, we have raspberry and blackberry bushes in the garden in addition to sweet peas and so many pretty lilies. It's quiet, it's peaceful and it's starting to feel like home even if I felt overwhelmed at how much stuff we had to unpack many a time.

Over a week in and we're still unpacking - it's pretty much endless, or just endlessly moving boxes around until they find a new home - the basement works well for that challenge at least. The garden (pictured above - well the deck part is) is a little unruly - i'm longing for a somewhat cooler day to really get to grips with it all. It's nice to have yet another reason to go to estate sales (like we needed another reason) but it's a great way of picking up garden equipment on the cheap - like a $2 spade. Sorted!

In fact the move seems to have been the right thing for the kitties too - they seem so much more at peace with each other and happier in themselves, perhaps it's because there's three kitties over the road that they can glare at and a couple of friendly looking squirrels that run up and down the magnolia tree throughout the day.

Either way, I'm glad we managed to find this house, for us all. We're still somewhat in the midst of unpacking, but I can't wait to share some more photographs of the place once everything is more in place!

Home ownership suits us.

  2. WELCOME BACK!! with only one photo.... :(
Dammit Joe! You only had to do one job! (Hope he's OK, and the ankle's getting better!) At least you can enjoy the first two weeks in your new home together :)

It sounds awesome! Unpacking sucks... but it'll get done. I think we got so sick of boxes we just powered through and just unpacked and with everything out it was easier to put away. We're still moving things every now and then to a better spot!

So happy that it's going well!

Although "Collage Hunks Hauling Junk" is a great name for a business. I'd hire them just on the basis of the name. Gold star to them.

    1. Haha i'm such a tease :P You shall have to wait and see for more pictures - also because I lost the card reader thingy and couldn't get them uploaded but that's another issue entirely.

The number of boxes are going down so I guess we're getting somewhere! The back spare living room space is basically a dumping ground, you'll find everything from vinyl to a Christmas tree, hardware stuff and so many books.

Joe's doing better, he's getting there slowly. Poor fella.

  3. Nothing like an illness or accident to seriously screw up your moving plans! Last time we moved my BF got the flu right before - needless to say he wasn't exactly at his most energetic. Anyway, congratulations!

    1. Yeah there's only so much renting I think I could have ever done, it gets a bit tedious not being able to personalize or update. Onwards and upwards as they say!

  5. How exciting! Owning a house is so much better than continually renting a place (and you can totally make it your own!!) I'm so happy for you! And with the added bonus of berry bushes?? You luckies!

    1. Yeah we scored really well on the raspberries - there's some blackberries too but they don't seem to either be a lot of them or they just aren't producing. We're getting about a small breakfast bowl of raspberries a day which is awesome, need to work out what to do with them other than constantly eating them with chocolate ice cream lol

  7. I'm glad you've managed to find a house you both really like, though I think you're slightly crazy for moving over the fourth of July hah! At least for the most part you're settled, and here's hoping the rest of those boxes get unpacked soon and with great ease. Hope Joe is doing ok! x

    1. Well we had to get out of our apartment asap because we'd handed our lease in and were being charged by the day because we'd gone over our original moving out date. After spending all our money on house inspections and down payments, money was super tight so we had to move then. People had offered to help but didn't turned up.

  12. Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Joe ended up damaged during the move! But very glad that you're now in.
And there's really no hurry to unpack everything all at once. Do a little at a time and before you know it you'll be settled.
Then you get to where I am now which is looking around wondering what I ever did to deserve such a gorgeous house and wondering how this all happened.
    Domesticity suits me.
    Enjoy!

  15. Hope Joe is okay and his ankle is doing better now. That must have been an absolute nightmare and worry!
I'm glad to hear that you're settling in well. It's always nice to have so much space that you don't know where to put things especially after living somewhere that you've been a little more cramped. It's good that the cats are settling in too. I do wonder about how Roxie will be when we come to move in the next few years. I guess I'll just have to wait and see!
